The family of United Nations human rights rapporteur Francesca Albanese has initiated legal action against the Trump administration over sanctions imposed on her. Albanese’s husband and child filed the lawsuit, claiming that the sanctions aim to punish her for highlighting human rights abuses faced by Palestinians.

According to Al Jazeera, Albanese has served as the special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza since 2022, focusing on human rights violations in the region. The Trump administration sanctioned her in July 2025, labeling her as “unfit” and accusing her of engaging in “biased and malicious activities” against the U.S. and Israel.

The lawsuit defends Albanese’s comments as protected free speech under the First Amendment, asserting that her expressions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the International Criminal Court’s work are vital to her role. Albanese, who has faced significant backlash for her criticisms of Israeli actions, has seen her profile rise dramatically since Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza on October 8, 2023.

The U.S. State Department has dismissed the lawsuit as “baseless lawfare,” maintaining that the sanctions are both legal and justifiable. Sanctions typically freeze U.S.-based assets and restrict business dealings with the sanctioned individual. Albanese’s family argues that the use of sanctions to silence human rights allegations raises serious ethical questions, particularly as it impacts their lives, including that of their American daughter.
