The head of the British military has responded to criticism regarding the UK’s preparedness for the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton stated that he “completely rejects” claims of inadequacy, emphasizing that the UK has been enhancing its military presence in the region for several weeks. He described the current situation as “probably the most dangerous time of the last 30 years.” According to BBC News, concerns have been raised particularly about the deployment of a Royal Navy ship to Cyprus, which is intended to protect the UK military base at RAF Akrotiri from drone threats.
Sir Richard confirmed that the Type 45 destroyer, HMS Dragon, would set sail “in the next few days, as soon as it's got ammunition on board.” The ship has been undergoing maintenance and is currently docked in Portsmouth. Meanwhile, France and Greece have already sent military assets to Cyprus in response to the escalating tensions in the region.
The military chief attributed the drone attack on the RAF base to an Iranian-aligned group operating from Lebanon. He dismissed accusations that the UK’s response was delayed, reiterating that the primary focus is on protecting British citizens and interests. Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for perceived indecisiveness in the UK’s response, claiming that Britain has been viewed as “weak” and that allies have accused the UK of not taking action.
In light of the conflict, Sir Richard noted that the UK has increased its military capabilities in Cyprus, deploying additional Typhoon and F-35 jets, along with over 400 personnel to bolster defense efforts. This comes as the US has begun deploying bombers to the UK for potential operations against Iranian missile sites. Sir Richard expressed confidence that the US would adhere to using UK bases solely for “defensive” operations, while maintaining that the UK military would keep all options under review regarding further involvement in the conflict.
