The House of Lords has voted to ban pornography depicting sex acts between stepfamily members. This decision follows an amendment proposed by Conservative peer Gabby Bertin, who led a review into pornography regulation that was published last year.

According to The Guardian, the amendment passed narrowly, with 144 votes in favor and 143 against. The new law criminalizes the production and possession of pornographic material that portrays incestuous relationships between family members or sexual acts involving step- or foster-relations where one party pretends to be underage.

The ban is part of a broader governmental effort to address harmful online content. Last year, the UK government criminalized material depicting women being choked. Some ministers had previously raised concerns about the feasibility of enforcing the new ban, given that sexual relationships between step-relatives are not illegal under the current law.

Lady Bertin expressed her approval of the government’s initiative, emphasizing the need to combat harmful content that normalizes abusive relationships and child sexual abuse. She stated that the UK is leading the way in regulating the pornography industry.

In conjunction with this ban, the government plans to introduce an amendment to the crime and policing bill that would hold technology executives accountable for not removing non-consensual intimate images, commonly known as “revenge porn.” Technology Secretary Liz Kendall highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting women and girls online, stating that tech companies must take responsibility for abusive content on their platforms.
