ABC Classic has announced the 12 semifinalists for the 2026 ABC Young Performers Awards, a competition that showcases emerging instrumental talent from across Australia. The selected musicians will advance to the live performance round scheduled for August, following weeks of careful deliberation by the adjudication panel.

According to ABC News, the awards have previously launched the careers of notable Australian musicians, including composer Brett Dean and flautist Eliza Shephard. The competition is open to solo instrumentalists aged 31 and under, with the youngest semifinalist in 2026 being just 13 years old.

Each semifinalist submitted a 40-minute performance video, which included at least one piece by an Australian composer. The 12 musicians represent a diverse range of instruments, including piano, violin, cello, flute, saxophone, guitar, and percussion. They hail from various regions, including New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and Tasmania.

The live recitals will take place in Sydney and Melbourne, where the semifinalists will have the opportunity to connect with audiences. Pianist Dillon Chan expressed that performing is about connection, stating that audience members often share how moved they were by his performances. The three finalists will have the chance to compete for a cash prize and perform with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House in November.

The public can attend the recitals on August 11 in Sydney and August 12-13 in Melbourne. Tickets are available for $10 per recital, and those unable to attend in person can look forward to broadcasts of the performances on ABC Classic later in the year.
