Tottenham Hotspur’s non-executive chairman Peter Charrington has acknowledged that the club’s decisions were not driven by football success, following a challenging season that saw them narrowly avoid relegation. In an open letter to supporters, Charrington admitted that the club fell ‘well short’ of expectations, finishing 17th in the Premier League for the second consecutive year. According to BBC News, Tottenham secured their top-flight status with a crucial 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day of the season.
Charrington, who was appointed to the Spurs board in March 2025, revealed that the Lewis family authorized a complete reset of the club back in September. This decision came after recognizing the need for significant changes to improve the team’s performance. The resignation of long-serving executive chairman Daniel Levy was a key part of this reset, as the club sought to address its shortcomings.
In his letter, Charrington pointed out that essential qualities such as ambition and the connection between the team and its supporters had diminished over time. He emphasized the need for better expertise in key roles and acknowledged that the squad had not been adequately built to compete in the Premier League.
Under the leadership of manager Roberto de Zerbi, who signed a five-year contract in March, Spurs are now focused on rebuilding. Charrington expressed confidence in de Zerbi’s ability to restore the club’s competitive edge. Midfielders James Maddison and Conor Gallagher credited de Zerbi with saving the team from relegation, highlighting the positive impact he had on the squad’s morale.
Charrington also addressed speculation about the club’s ownership, stating that Tottenham is not for sale and that the Lewis family remains committed to the rebuilding process. He outlined plans for investment in the squad, medical and performance departments, and the club’s academy, as well as the women’s team. He thanked the fans for their loyalty during a difficult season and promised to work towards meeting their expectations in the future.
