More than sixty community groups signed a letter to ALP leaders on behalf of the Arab Australian community. In their letter the signatories highlighted the critical importance of having the Hon Shaoquett Moselmane endorsed for a winnable position on the Labor ticket of the next Legislative Council of NSW. We are confident his successful candidacy will be a credit to his community and to the advancement of the standing of the Labor Party within the communities he humbly served, the letter said.
“Mr Moselmane devoted most of his life passionately serving his communities. He is a great, principled asset to the community, the Labor Party and the NSW Parliament. The respect he commands in the community was never lightly earned. He provided a critical link to communities that have been overly underrepresented politically”.
The letter stated that the level of support Mr Moselmane enjoys could not be more overwhelmingly evident than when he was recently subjected to a well-orchestrated character assassination campaign to discredit him and tarnish his reputation. With the help of the Arab Australian community, and indeed many other communities and activists across society, Mr Moselmane weathered that contrived storm with flying colours. Indeed, he came out of it a stronger politician as the people’s principled representative of their hopes and defender of their aspirations.
We cannot but value Mr Moselmane’s high level of integrity, modesty, engaging personality and generosity of spirit in the service of society, said the signatories. “We appreciate his tireless pursuit of social justice, human rights and issues of fairness and equal opportunity. Over the years he championed many causes. He raised money for Kids on Wheels, donation campaigns for flood and fire victims, funds for Youth Off the Streets as well as similarly worthy international causes. He had also initiated the Indigenous Human Rights Awards and the Multicultural Media Awards both of which he successfully led over many years”.
The letter affirmed that Labor’s endorsement of Mr Moselmane’s candidacy will be instrumental in promoting Labor causes and cementing electoral support for the party by the Arab Australian community.
