The Tharwa General Store, a cornerstone of the local community for nearly a century, is set to change ownership as the Jeffery family prepares to sell the establishment. Owned by the Jeffery family since 1926, the store has served various roles, including a post office, fuel stop, and community gathering place.

According to ABC News, owner Kevin Jeffery stated that it is time for someone else to take over the store, emphasizing a desire for continuity in serving the local community. The store has been a vital part of Tharwa, which is recognized as the oldest official settlement in the Australian Capital Territory, proclaimed in 1862.

The store was originally purchased by Clarrie Jeffery and his wife Ruby, who provided essential goods to the surrounding rural community. Over the decades, it has adapted to meet local needs, including offering lunch orders for school children and serving as a hub for local events and activities.

Kevin Jeffery, who took over after his father Valantine passed away in 2017, noted the importance of the store in maintaining community connections. Valantine was known for his deep commitment to community service, having also served in the ACT Legislative Assembly and as captain of the local bushfire brigade.

As the community evolves, Kevin hopes the new owner will continue the legacy of the Tharwa General Store, ensuring it remains a vital resource for residents who prefer not to travel to Canberra for their daily needs. The store’s resilience through natural disasters and its role as a meeting point highlight its significance in the lives of those in Tharwa.
