Six teenage girls have been arrested after two separate incidents of anti-social behaviour “fuelled by online trends” in south-west London, according to BBC News. The Metropolitan Police reported that about 100 officers were dispatched to Clapham High Street at 17:00 BST on Tuesday after young people attempted to access shops and restaurants, while also lighting fires and setting off fireworks on Clapham Common.
During these incidents, five individuals were assaulted, including four police officers. One officer suffered an injury while making an arrest. A 17-year-old girl was charged and bailed to appear at court later this month, while two 13-year-olds were also arrested but granted bail. The police had previously arrested three girls on Saturday for similar disturbances involving theft and assault.
In response to the chaos, a dispersal order was implemented on Tuesday. The police warned that further arrests could follow, emphasizing that those who have not yet been apprehended may still face consequences.
Local residents expressed concern over the disturbances, with one witness describing the intimidating atmosphere created by the large group of young people. Business owners reported aggressive behavior from the crowd, particularly at food establishments.
Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s whereabouts, highlighting the potential legal repercussions of joining such gatherings. The police have established a plan to increase officer presence in the area in response to these incidents.
