Students Tackle Agent Orange Contamination in Sydney Waterways

University students are actively working to remove remnants of Agent Orange chemicals from a waterway connected to Sydney Harbour, more than 50 years after the Vietnam War. The project is taking place in Homebush Bay on the Rhodes peninsula, a site previously known for herbicide and pesticide production by the US company Union Carbide from 1928 to 1986. The chemicals 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D, components of Agent Orange, were manufactured there, contributing to long-lasting pollutants known as dioxins.

According to ABC News, dioxins are persistent organic pollutants that pose significant health risks. The Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs reported that during the Vietnam War, the US military sprayed about 170 kilograms of the mixture over southern Vietnam, affecting 3 million hectares of land and 20,000 Vietnamese villages, leading to serious health conditions among the local population.

The students, including Dylan Freeman from the University of New South Wales, are employing bioremediation techniques to mitigate contamination in Homebush Bay. This process utilizes microorganisms to remove toxins from contaminated sites. Freeman noted that the team aims to develop a commercially viable bioremediation method that could be applied to various locations, including Homebush Bay.

In their efforts, the students collected sediment samples from the mudflats of Homebush Bay, discovering bacteria that had adapted to the dioxins. They have since grown more of these beneficial bacteria and reinjected them into the site, leading to a significant decrease in dioxin levels over a three-month period. This innovative approach could help restore the affected ecosystem, benefiting both the local fishing community and the environment.

Community members, including local resident Sharon Weismantel, expressed cautious optimism about the project, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that beneficial species, such as mangroves, are not harmed in the process. The initiative represents a significant step toward addressing the legacy of pollution from the Vietnam War era in Sydney’s waterways.
