Sean Penn will direct a new film about the January 6 riot set to star Bradley Cooper. According to The Guardian, the project will be a fact-based drama that follows the life of a police officer who gets mixed up in the violent insurrection of 2021.

Cooper, who recently won his second Oscar, is reportedly in talks to play him. The film, which remains untitled, has been described as a “passion project” for Penn, who aims to tell an unexpected story about friendship intertwined with the chaos of that day.

The narrative will be developed in collaboration with the real-life police officer, whose identity has not been disclosed. This approach is intended to provide an authentic perspective on the events that transpired during the Capitol riot.

Penn has been vocal about his views on the January 6 events, having attended a House committee hearing in 2022 to observe the proceedings. He has previously criticized Donald Trump, labeling him as “an enemy of mankind.” Meanwhile, Cooper has been busy with various projects, including an upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel and a role in Bong Joon-ho’s animated film.

The January 6 events are also believed to be loosely covered in Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming film, which will examine social media’s role in the events. This convergence of projects highlights the ongoing interest in the implications of that day in American history.
