President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has appointed Mr. Gola, the former chairperson of the South Sudan National Youth Union, as the new Chief Administrator of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. The appointment was announced through a decree read on national television on Friday evening. During the swearing-in ceremony, which President Kiir presided over, he urged the newly appointed Chief to collaborate with local community leaders to foster peace in the area.

This appointment comes in the wake of Gen. David Yau Yau, a prominent general from the Murle community, joining Dr. Machar’s Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO). Mr. Gola, expressing his priorities, emphasized the critical need for security to achieve lasting peace and development in the region. He stated that enhancing security is essential for ensuring that residents can move freely without fear.

Mr. Gola is notably the youngest individual to hold such a significant position in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. The ceremony was marked by the unexpected attendance of Gen. David Yau Yau, who notably shook hands with President Kiir, his former leader. This act was a surprising development to many, as it is unprecedented for someone who has formally left a political party to return and participate in such an official event.
