Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth announced a comprehensive plan aimed at addressing NHS waiting lists and educational standards in Wales. According to BBC News, the party’s proposals outline actions to be taken within the first 100 days of a potential government following the upcoming Senedd elections in May.

Iorwerth acknowledged that the public does not expect immediate changes to NHS waiting lists within the initial 100 days, stating that his party aims to reduce these lists to pre-Covid levels by 2030. The plan includes multiple reviews of public services, with a specific focus on healthcare.

The 60-page bilingual document highlights a range of initiatives, including the establishment of up to 10 surgical hubs across Wales. Iorwerth emphasized the importance of having a clear roadmap for action, which includes immediate measures as well as long-term strategies to improve public services.

In addition to healthcare, the plan proposes educational reforms, such as developing a foundational literacy and numeracy plan and conducting a national school building conditions survey. Other notable initiatives include expanding free childcare and empowering local authorities to regulate smartphone use in schools.

Plaid Cymru, which has historically supported Labour-led governments, aims to secure enough seats to form a minority government, navigating the challenges of a new proportional voting system. The party’s plans reflect a commitment to addressing pressing public concerns, with a focus on delivering effective governance in Wales.
