Péter Magyar has achieved a stunning electoral victory in Hungary, effectively ending Viktor Orbán’s 16-year tenure as Prime Minister. According to BBC News, Magyar’s Tisza party is projected to secure 138 seats, significantly outpacing Orbán’s Fidesz party, which is expected to claim 55 seats.
In a jubilant address to supporters beside the River Danube, Magyar declared, “We did it. Together we overthrew the Hungarian regime.” The election saw a record turnout, with 79.5% of the electorate participating, marking a historic moment for democratic engagement in Hungary.
As Magyar celebrates his victory, he has vowed to reverse many of Orbán’s policies, including reforms in education and health, and to restore judicial independence. He aims to dismantle the patronage system that has been criticized for fostering corruption and benefiting party loyalists.
Orbán, who has been a dominant figure in Hungarian politics through four consecutive election victories, acknowledged the defeat in a somber address to his party members, stating, “The result of the election is clear and painful.” He thanked the estimated 2.5 million Hungarians who remained loyal during his leadership.
Magyar’s victory has also resonated internationally, with leaders like Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk congratulating him and expressing hopes for better relations within the European Union. Magyar plans to address issues of corruption and judicial independence to unlock EU funding that has been previously frozen.
As celebrations erupted across Budapest, many supporters reflected on the significance of this political shift, with Magyar promising a new era for Hungary.
