Dominic Perrottet’s hand-picked teacher recruitment program has failed to recruit a single teacher, Department of Education Documents reveal.

In November 2020, Dominic Perrottet and Education Minister Sarah Mitchell announced a “new pathway into teaching for professionals”, but 17 months later the program hasn’t even started.

The 2020 announcement had promised $400,000 to encourage professionals to “make a mid-career jump to teaching” through Teach For Australia.

However, the Department of Education documents reveal the program won’t even have its “final design” ready until April 2022, 17 months after it was announced.

The documents also reveal that the NSW Government attempted to cut its own funding announcement in July 2021, requesting Teach for Australia’s support to “reducing the grant amount to $200,000.”

The Perrottet Government’s failure to recruit enough teachers has already left 2,383 teacher vacancies in NSW schools this year.

NSW Deputy Labor Leader and Shadow Minister for Education Prue Car said:

“Dominic Perrottet announced this teaching pathway without doing his homework, and now 17 months later it still isn’t open for applications.”

“Not a single extra teacher is in NSW schools under this program, while the ongoing teacher shortages mean students are missing out.”
