The Penrith Panthers have once again secured the Provan-Summons Trophy, claiming their fourth consecutive title after defeating the Melbourne Storm 14-6 in the 2024 NRL Grand Final at Accor Stadium. The match began with both teams struggling to find their rhythm, marred by turnovers and costly errors. Melbourne took an early lead when Harry Grant crossed the try line, followed by a successful conversion from Nick Meaney.
The Panthers responded in the 26th minute when winger Sunia Turuva scored a crucial try. However, Nathan Cleary’s missed conversion left the scoreline at 6-4 in favour of the Storm. Just before halftime, 2024 Clive Churchill Medallist Liam Martin broke through the Storm’s defence, scoring another try. Cleary’s successful conversion put the Panthers ahead 10-6 at the break.
The second half saw Melbourne’s Jack Howarth nearly score a try, but the referee deemed it unsuccessful in a controversial decision that sparked heated debate. Despite the disallowed try, the Storm continued to fight hard, but Penrith’s formidable defence kept them at bay. Former Bulldog Paul Alamoti sealed the victory for the Panthers with a try in the 60th minute, extinguishing any hope of a Melbourne comeback. Cleary, however, missed his second conversion attempt of the night.
Achieving a four-peat, the Penrith Panthers have cemented their status as one of the greatest teams in the modern era, rivaling the legendary St George side that dominated the competition throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
