Labor is calling for the NSW Government to release the Road Network Performance plan, the review of traffic along the M5 and M8 conducted by Transport for NSW.

The plan was promised twelve months after the M8 opened, on July 4th 2020, after residents raised concerns about trucks being forced onto suburban roads.

The NSW Parliament will hold its final inquiry into road tolling regimes in NSW, in Bexley today.

The Inquiry began in March 2021 and has shone a light on the toll burden placed on Sydney families as a result of the NSW Liberals’ tollmania, particularly those in Western Sydney.

Sydney is the most tolled city in the world.

Tolls are already expensive enough as it is, with drivers will pay over $100 billion in tolls over the life of the existing contracts.

But because of the dud deals the Premier Dominic Perrottet has presided over to privatise roads and whack more tolls on them, now drivers will be paying even more as inflation rises.

It’s eating into the pockets of motorists and families – and the hardest hit are those in Western Sydney.

Tolls across six Sydney toll roads are due to rise again on July 1.

We have also called for toll signs to be installed to inform motorists of how much they will pay and how much time they will save, when using a specific toll road.

NSW Labor Leader Chris Minns said:

“We have heard of families and businesses going in to debt because of the Government’s tollmania, we have learnt about the impact on suburban streets as drivers try to avoid being slugged with another toll.

‘We have also heard about the stark difference between the impact tolls are having on those who live in Western Sydney and those who live in the east.

‘NSW is in a cost of living crisis, wages are flat and yet toll costs continue to rise.

“With Dominic Perrottet all roads seem to lead to higher tolls.”

Shadow Minister for Roads John Graham said:

“The toll inquiry has exposed just how hard tolls are hitting Sydney.

“On the M5 corridor it is obvious the crippling cost of tolls is forcing more trucks onto suburban streets.

“The Government promised they would release this traffic plan after twelve months. Instead we have seen businesses under pressure and congestion on neighbourhood streets.”
