A recent report has revealed that the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is failing women due to what has been termed ‘medical misogyny.’ According to The Guardian, a survey conducted by Mumsnet found that half of female patients feel they have been ignored or dismissed by medical professionals because of their sex.

The Mumsnet survey, which analyzed nearly 100,000 posts from women over the past decade, highlighted alarming statistics. It found that 50% of women believe they have been dismissed, ignored or not believed by an NHS professional because of their sex, while 64% reported being told their pain or symptoms were merely ‘normal’ or ‘in their head.’ Furthermore, 68% expressed a belief that the NHS does not adequately address women’s health issues.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged the findings, stating that the NHS has let women down for too long and emphasized the need for change. He announced initiatives aimed at improving women’s health services, including increased funding and the introduction of Martha’s rule, allowing patients the right to an urgent second opinion.

The report coincided with International Women’s Day and underscored persistent issues in healthcare, with many women sharing personal experiences of being dismissed or inadequately treated for various health conditions. One woman recounted years of suffering from endometriosis without a proper diagnosis, while another was told her pelvic pain was simply a result of being ‘very emotional.’

Mumsnet is advocating for mandatory training for healthcare professionals on sex-specific biases and the establishment of women’s health hubs across England to ensure better care and support. Founder Justine Roberts emphasized that acknowledgment of these issues without concrete reform does little to alleviate the suffering of women in the healthcare system.
