According to BBC News, Kylian Mbappe has become the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice after finishing as the top scorer at the 2026 tournament. The France forward scored 10 goals in eight matches, finishing ahead of Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the scoring race.

Mbappe had previously scored eight goals to win the Golden Boot at Qatar 2022, making him the first player to claim the award at consecutive World Cups. The 27-year-old was also the first man to score 10 goals at a World Cup since West Germany’s Gerd Muller in 1970. Only France’s Just Fontaine, with 13 in 1958, and Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis, with 11 in 1954, have managed more goals in a single tournament.

His two goals in France’s 6-4 bronze-match defeat by England took Mbappe to 22 men’s World Cup goals, one more than Messi. Mbappe said he would have preferred to reach the final rather than finish as leading scorer, adding that the achievement would matter to his legacy after retirement. Messi ended the tournament on eight goals after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the final.

World champions Spain collected the remaining main individual awards. Captain Rodri was named Golden Ball winner as the tournament’s best player, with Messi receiving the Silver Ball and Mbappe the Bronze Ball. Goalkeeper Unai Simon won the Golden Glove after conceding once in eight games and keeping seven clean sheets, while Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsi was named best young player. The 19-year-old played every minute for Spain, whose defence conceded only once during the tournament.
