The ongoing violence in Lebanon has prompted calls for the country to join the International Criminal Court (ICC). Recent Israeli military operations have resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction, raising concerns about violations of international law. According to Al Jazeera, more than 1,200 people have been killed, including more than 120 children, and one million have been displaced due to the conflict.
The situation mirrors the circumstances in Gaza, where international attention has been drawn to alleged war crimes committed by Israel. In contrast, Lebanon has not pursued similar avenues for accountability, despite the severe impact of Israeli actions on its citizens. In April 2024, Lebanon almost gave the court jurisdiction over the country but later backtracked, leaving its citizens without a clear path to justice.
Joining the ICC could provide Lebanon with an opportunity to seek accountability for atrocities committed on its territory. The court is equipped to prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity, which would allow Lebanon to build cases against both Israeli and Hezbollah perpetrators. This move would also signal Lebanon’s commitment to international law and its willingness to collaborate with global organizations on accountability efforts.
Furthermore, membership in the ICC could enhance Lebanon’s diplomatic standing and offer a platform to advocate for its rights in the international arena. By aligning itself with the ICC, Lebanon could differentiate itself from nations that disregard international law, reinforcing its sovereignty and the protection of its citizens.
As the conflict continues, the need for accountability becomes increasingly urgent. The ICC may not resolve the ongoing war, but it could provide a framework for justice that Lebanon desperately needs. With the international community’s focus on the situation, now is the time for Lebanon to reconsider its position and join the ICC to pursue justice for its people.
