Laura Dern has joined the cast of the new season of The White Lotus, days after Helena Bonham Carter left the show due to creative differences. The fourth season of the wealth satire is currently being filmed in the south of France, and will be set during the Cannes Film Festival.

Bonham Carter left last week, with makers HBO saying “it had become apparent” that the character written for her by creator Mike White “did not align once on set”. The network didn’t give any details of the apparent disagreement but said her role would be recast, and Oscar winner Dern has now been announced as “checking into season four”.

The White Lotus has gained significant acclaim, winning multiple Emmy Awards for its satirical take on the lives of the wealthy. Each season unfolds in a different luxury resort, with the upcoming installment taking place against the glamorous backdrop of Cannes, known for its film deals and parties.

Shooting for the new season is expected to continue during this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 13 to 24. Dern, an Oscar winner for her role in Marriage Story, has a longstanding collaboration with White, having previously worked together on the film Year of the Dog and the TV series Enlightened, which earned Dern a Golden Globe.

In this season, Dern will join a cast that includes Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, and Vincent Cassel. The excitement surrounding The White Lotus continues to build as it prepares for its next chapter.
