Karmelo Anthony, now 19, was found guilty of murder by a jury in Collin County, Texas, after a week-long trial that garnered national attention due to its racial dynamics. The confrontation occurred when Anthony sought shelter under a tent belonging to Metcalf’s team during a rain shower, leading to a deadly altercation. Anthony’s defense claimed he acted in self-defense against a group of larger opponents, while prosecutors argued that the stabbing was a “sneak, surprise attack.”
The trial, which featured a jury with no Black members, was closely watched, and the verdict was met with emotional reactions in the courtroom. Anthony’s mother was seen crying as the sentence was delivered, while Metcalf’s twin brother, Hunter, was present for the first time.
Judge John Roach Jr. sentenced Anthony to 35 years in prison, and he was immediately remanded into the custody of the Collin County sheriff’s office. The case raised significant discussions regarding race and justice in America, especially given the demographics of the jury and the nature of the incident.
