The Israeli military ordered the forced displacement of the population of Lebanon’s southern city of Nabatieh on Tuesday, as part of its escalating campaign against Hezbollah. Reports indicate that Israeli forces conducted near-continuous artillery shelling on the outskirts of the city, coinciding with the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha. Direct air strikes were also reported, including an attack on a cemetery within the city limits.
According to Al Jazeera, the strikes have targeted surrounding villages, with significant damage reported in Yohmor al-Shaqif. This military operation has resulted in the deaths of at least 3,213 individuals in Lebanon since March 2, including civilians and paramedics.
Nabatieh has become a focal point for Israel’s military efforts, with analysts suggesting that the attacks aim to undermine the Shia community that predominantly supports Hezbollah. Political analyst Jad Dilati noted that Nabatieh serves as an administrative, economic, and symbolic heart of the south, making it a strategic target for Israeli forces.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his military’s intention to “crush” Hezbollah, declaring that military operations have expanded beyond the so-called “Yellow Line.” Despite a recent ceasefire announcement by US President Donald Trump, Israel and Hezbollah continue to exchange attacks, leading to widespread displacement and fear among the local population.
Lebanon’s government is preparing for direct negotiations with Israel, scheduled for June 2 and 3. In the face of ongoing violence, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called for national unity and solidarity during these challenging times. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has responded with its own military actions, clashing with Israeli forces in the region and condemning the upcoming negotiations between Lebanon and Israel.
