Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that a deal with the United States to avert conflict is “within reach”, in advance of talks between the two countries in Geneva, Switzerland. Araghchi emphasized that the potential for a historic agreement hinges on whether “diplomacy is given priority”, especially in light of ongoing military threats from the US.

According to Al Jazeera, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s commitment to never develop nuclear weapons while advocating for the peaceful use of nuclear technology for its citizens. The indirect negotiations, scheduled for Thursday, will be the third round of discussions mediated by Oman, which hopes for significant progress toward finalizing a deal.

In a related context, US President Donald Trump maintained a confrontational stance during his State of the Union address, stressing his preference for diplomacy but also warning against Iran’s missile development. He reiterated that he would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear capabilities, accusing the nation of pursuing its weapons ambitions despite previous warnings.

Araghchi has been leading the negotiations on behalf of Iran, while US representatives include White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Following the most recent talks, Trump indicated that Tehran has 10 to 15 days to make a “meaningful deal”, amid escalating military presence from the US in the region, including the deployment of the USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier.
