Students at several universities in Iran have staged anti-government protests – the first such rallies on this scale since last month’s deadly crackdown by the authorities. According to BBC News, footage has been verified showing demonstrators marching on the campus of the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran on Saturday, where scuffles broke out between them and government supporters.
The protests were organized in honor of thousands of those killed in mass protests in January. Students at various institutions, including a sit-in at Shahid Beheshti University and rallies in Mashhad, chanted slogans such as “death to the dictator” and “freedom, freedom.”
Protests began last month over economic grievances and soon spread to become the largest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (Hrana) reported at least 6,159 fatalities, including 5,804 protesters, 92 children, and 214 people affiliated with the government.
As tensions rise, Iranian authorities are preparing for a possible war with the US, which has increased its military presence in the region. The exiled opposition has urged President Trump to make good on his threats and strike, while other groups oppose foreign intervention. The situation remains fluid, with further protests anticipated in the coming days.
