A public inquiry has uncovered that Valdo Calocane, the man responsible for a triple murder in Nottingham, violently assaulted two colleagues just weeks before his deadly attacks. According to BBC News, the inquiry is examining the circumstances leading up to the incidents that occurred on 13 June 2023, when Calocane killed Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates.

On 5 May 2023, Calocane attacked a married couple at their workplace in Kegworth, Leicestershire, punching the husband and kicking the wife. Witnesses reported that Calocane displayed aggressive behavior, and police were called to the scene. However, they did not follow up with the victims or witnesses in a timely manner, with a police log indicating no visits had occurred by 2 June 2023.

Calocane had a history of mental health issues, having been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and previously sectioned under the Mental Health Act multiple times. The inquiry has revealed that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest related to a prior assault on a police officer. Despite this, law enforcement failed to act decisively before the murders.

The hearings are currently taking place at Mary Ward House in London and are expected to last for nine weeks. They involve testimonies from various agencies, including Nottinghamshire Police and the University of Nottingham, as well as individuals who had interactions with Calocane prior to the attacks. The inquiry aims to assess the actions taken by these agencies in response to Calocane’s violent behavior leading up to the tragic events.
