The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have initiated missile attacks against Israel, marking their first involvement in the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran. The group has declared that it targeted “sensitive Israeli military sites” and intends to continue such attacks until the military actions against their allies cease. Israel has reported intercepting two missiles launched from Yemen.

According to BBC News, the Houthis’ entry into the conflict raises concerns about potential disruptions to global trade, particularly since they possess the capability to target shipping routes in the Red Sea. The Houthis align themselves with what they term the “axis of resistance,” which includes other Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

The Houthis have been active in Yemen since seizing control of the northwest region twelve years ago, leading to a devastating civil war. Their control over Yemen’s Red Sea coastline is significant, as it enables them to influence maritime activities in a crucial shipping corridor.

Prior to the missile attacks, a Houthi military spokesman indicated readiness for direct military intervention, particularly if further US-Israeli strikes occurred. Following the missile launch, the group reiterated its commitment to continue attacks until the aggression against all resistance fronts ceases.

Historically, the Houthis have targeted shipping in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, previously launching nearly 200 attacks between November 2023 and early 2025. These actions have severely impacted shipping operations in the Red Sea, causing significant disruptions to global trade routes. The situation remains tense as the US and UK have conducted air strikes on Houthi positions in response to their maritime attacks.
