City of Parramatta is calling on the community to have their say on a draft flood study for the A’Becketts Creek catchment area.

A draft flood study has been developed using the latest technology and modelling methods to estimate flooding not only from the creek, but also from ‘local overland flow’ – water that moves through the local area during and following rain and when stormwater exceeds capacity.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said gathering local knowledge is key to getting this right.  

“Flood modelling is extremely complicated, and local knowledge can help us improve the draft model to create the finalised 2026 A’Becketts Creek Flood Study,” Cr Zaiter said.

“I want to assure everyone that all information gathered from this community consultation will be kept confidential, taken seriously and used to create final flood models for the A’Becketts Creek Flood Study.

“Large floods are fortunately, very rare, and might occur only once or twice every few decades and even though you might not have experienced flooding, it can happen and cause extensive property damage.”

In Australia, floods are the second most deadly natural disaster after heatwaves with Parramatta the most flash-flood affected major CBD in NSW.

“Knowledge is power, we need to know what is happening so both Council and state authorities are ready to protect lives and property before a major flood event occurs,” Cr Zaiter said.
