According to Cnbc, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer signaled that another round of President Donald Trump’s tariffs could be approaching. Asked on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” whether new duties are forthcoming, Greer said, “We expect to see some action soon.”
Greer said he could not specify a timeline because he must brief Congress and other stakeholders before revealing such plans. His comments followed a Financial Times report that additional duties could be announced as soon as this week.
The potential action comes as some existing import levies are set to lapse Friday. Trump imposed a blanket 10% tariff in February under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, hours after the Supreme Court struck down his sweeping “liberation day” tariff regime. The Section 122 tariffs will expire at 12:01 a.m. ET Friday unless Congress intervenes, an outcome that appears unlikely.
In early June, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative proposed tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 economies. The proposed duties, under Section 301 of the 1974 trade law, would respond to alleged forced-labor issues. Greer said the proposed tariffs would cover “about 99% of our trade,” adding that the scale illustrates the problem the administration says it faces.
