The UK government has identified seven areas for potential development as part of its initiative to create new towns in England. The housing department announced that these locations will undergo further consultation, with final decisions expected later this year.

According to BBC News, the selected sites include Tempsford, Leeds South Bank, Crews Hill and Chase Park, Manchester Victoria North, Thamesmead, Brabazon and West Innovation Arc, and a site in Milton Keynes. In contrast, six other proposed sites, including one in Cheshire that faced public protests, have been deprioritized.

Labour ministers have committed to commencing construction on three of the new towns before the next general election, which must occur by 2029. The initiative was first introduced during the Labour Party conference in 2023, where leader Sir Keir Starmer promised new developments on the outskirts of major English cities.

The government aims to build 1.5 million new homes in England by the next election, although industry experts have raised concerns about the feasibility of this target. Sites will undergo environmental assessments, with each location expected to accommodate between 10,000 and 40,000 homes. While funding for the initiative is still being determined, ministers have indicated that they will utilize existing affordable housing resources and a new investment agency to support the developments.
