Fears of a global energy crisis are escalating following recent attacks on major gas facilities in the Middle East. According to BBC News, UK gas prices have surged 25% after a strike on the world’s largest natural gas factory in Qatar. This increase could lead to prolonged bill rises for UK households, with inflation expected to move towards 5%.

The Guardian reports that Iran has issued a warning of “zero restraint” if its energy infrastructure is targeted again. This comes in response to Israel’s strike on Iran’s South Pars, part of the world’s largest natural gas field, which has prompted retaliatory attacks on gas facilities in Qatar and other Gulf states. Saudi Arabia has threatened to strike back at Iran, stating that its patience is running out.

The Daily Express has highlighted that the Bank of England is prepared to increase interest rates, which could result in a surge in inflation. Experts are predicting that UK families might face three interest rate rises this year due to the economic fallout from the ongoing conflict.

Global markets have reacted negatively to the situation, with significant declines reported following the attacks on energy infrastructure. The Financial Times notes that central banks are warning that inflation may remain elevated for an extended period, raising concerns about a protracted energy shock.
