The family of Kumanjayi Little Baby expressed their disappointment after missing the court hearing of her alleged murderer, Jefferson Lewis. They claim they were not adequately informed about the proceedings, which left them feeling let down by the judicial system. According to ABC News, Kumanjayi’s grandfather, Robin Japanangka Granites, stated that the family received incorrect information regarding the timing of the hearing and were unaware that the court’s live-stream link was broken.

The tragedy unfolded when Kumanjayi, a five-year-old girl, disappeared from a town camp in Alice Springs last month, prompting a large-scale search that ultimately led to the discovery of her body. In light of this devastating loss, Mr. Granites emphasized the need for better communication from authorities, particularly in light of the family’s first language being Warlpiri.

On the day of the hearing, Kumanjayi’s family arrived at the courthouse only to find that the proceedings had concluded. They were disheartened that no representatives or interpreters were available to provide updates. Mr. Granites voiced frustration over the lack of information, stating, “There was no one to represent my family at the courthouse, not even the mum of a baby, the girl that we lost, not even the interpreters, there was no one there to interpret for our people.”

The court has scheduled the next hearing for July 30, and Kumanjayi’s family hopes to receive timely updates moving forward. Mr. Granites called for better practices that ensure families are kept informed throughout the legal process, highlighting the importance of support for grieving families during such difficult times.
