Falklands War veteran Simon Weston has said he hopes King Charles III can convince U.S. President Donald Trump to “back down” over reports the U.S. could review its position on the UK’s claim to the territory. According to BBC News, Weston criticized Trump’s recent comments as disrespectful to both the islanders and veterans who served in the conflict.

Weston, who suffered almost 50% burns during the 1982 Falklands War, described Trump’s remarks as a “hissy fit” that undermines the sacrifices made by those who fought for the islands. He urged the King to encourage Trump to “back down and calm down” regarding his position on the territorial dispute.

The U.S. State Department reaffirmed its neutral position on the sovereignty claims between the UK and Argentina, acknowledging the conflicting claims but recognizing the UK’s administration of the islands. Meanwhile, Downing Street has maintained that sovereignty rests with the UK and emphasized the importance of the islanders’ right to self-determination.

The Falklands remain a contentious issue between the UK and Argentina, with the Argentine government recently expressing its willingness to resume negotiations. However, the UK has shown reluctance to engage in talks, especially given the current political climate. Argentina’s President Javier Milei, a Trump ally, reiterated that the islands, referred to as Malvinas, will always be considered Argentine.

Weston cautioned against aggressive rhetoric from Milei, suggesting it could lead to unnecessary conflict and loss of life. He emphasized the need for respect towards the Falkland Islanders and veterans alike as discussions about sovereignty continue.
