Europe’s leaders are grappling with internal discord as the US-Israeli military actions against Iran escalate. According to BBC News, the continent has appeared uncoordinated in its response since the attacks began three days ago.

The Big Three of Europe—France, Germany, and the UK—issued a joint statement warning Iran they were ready to take “defensive action” to destroy its ability to fire missiles and drones unless Tehran stopped its “indiscriminate attacks”. However, the UK has since agreed to US requests to utilize British military bases for “defensive” strikes on Iranian missile sites. This has raised concerns about the legality of such actions under international law, with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressing opposition to military intervention outside of this framework.

The European Union’s response has also highlighted a lack of cohesion, as member states’ foreign ministers refrained from advocating for regime change in Iran, despite the European Commission’s president Ursula von der Leyen calling for a credible transition in the country. This inconsistency has left many questioning Europe’s ability to present a unified front in global matters.

As tensions rise, European nations face additional challenges, including rising energy prices and the need to consider the safety of their citizens in the region. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East underscores the difficulties Europe faces in balancing national interests while striving for collective action.
