Arabic version: دبي تشهد اضطرابات غير مسبوقة بعد الهجمات الإيرانية
Thousands of people are stranded across the Middle East as Iran launched attacks across the region in response to a massive and ongoing attack against it by the US and Israel. In Dubai, two luxury hotels and its main airport – the world’s busiest by passenger traffic – have been damaged. According to BBC News, residents and tourists alike are feeling the impact of this escalating conflict.
Local resident Becky Williams described witnessing about 15 missiles launched from behind her house as UAE authorities intercepted incoming Iranian projectiles. Despite the alarming situation, she expressed confidence in the UAE military’s ability to protect its airspace. Meanwhile, the Fairmont The Palm hotel experienced a large explosion, and debris from an intercepted drone caused a minor fire at the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel.
For many, vacation plans have been disrupted. Satya Jaganathan had intended to hike on Sunday but found herself sheltering in place instead. Her family, living close to the Jebel Ali port, had to seek refuge indoors due to falling debris. She remarked on the eerie atmosphere, stating, “It’s still relatively calm as there are only loud noises every few hours, but it is eerie because this is not the Dubai we are used to.”
Dubai International Airport has also been affected, with authorities reporting an incident that has grounded thousands of flights, marking one of the most significant disruptions to global travel since the Covid-19 pandemic. Judy Trotter, a British holidaymaker, shared her experience of arriving at the airport only to find all flights canceled, leaving her and many others stranded.
The situation has left many feeling anxious. Kate Fischer, another tourist, shared her fears and the surreal experience of trying to keep her children entertained while witnessing smoke from nearby attacks. She prepared a grab bag in case of emergency, highlighting the tension felt by those caught in this unexpected conflict.
