Courtney Barnett has immersed herself in the desert to create her new album, *Creature of Habit*, which reflects a significant personal and artistic transformation. According to The Guardian, Barnett spent close to a year in Joshua Tree, California, where she embraced solitude and the surrounding landscape to write her fourth record.

In the early months of 2024, Barnett experienced a period of disorientation, having recently moved to Los Angeles and winding down her independent record label, Milk! Records. This transitional phase inspired the album’s opening track, “Stay in Your Lane,” which captures her struggle with change and self-identity during this time of upheaval.

Unlike her previous work, *Creature of Habit* is characterized by a more confident sound. Barnett’s live performances of new tracks late last year showcased her evolution as an artist, allowing her to connect more intimately with audiences in smaller venues.

The album’s title track, “Mantis,” emerged during her time in the desert, where a chance encounter with a praying mantis provided the inspiration she needed. Barnett describes this moment as a sign that she was on the right path, reflecting her deep connection to nature and creativity in the desert.

As she navigated her artistic journey, Barnett also explored new hobbies, including surfing and pottery, which helped her break free from her comfort zone. The album concludes with a message of optimism, encapsulated in the closing track “Another Beautiful Day,” where she emphasizes the importance of self-care and personal growth. *Creature of Habit* is set to be released on March 27 via Mom + Pop and Fiction Records.
