A unique exhibition in the inner-city Perth suburb of Northbridge sent 25 disposable cameras to a diverse group of locals with one simple instruction: ‘Take five and wind it on.’ The initiative distributed these cameras to residents to capture five themed photos and then pass the camera along.

According to ABC News, the project aims to foster connections among neighbors while showcasing the beauty and diversity of the suburb. Curator Alice Ding noted that participants captured a variety of subjects, from local businesses to candid moments, emphasizing the charm of imperfect photography.

The exhibition highlights Northbridge’s rich multicultural history, which includes contributions from Chinese migrants in the late 1800s and waves of Greek and Italian immigrants post-World War II. These communities have enriched the area with diverse culinary offerings and vibrant cultural expressions.

Ding expressed excitement about the overwhelming response to the project, which resulted in a challenging selection process for the exhibition. Hundreds of photos were reviewed, revealing everyday beauty and shared experiences among the community members. The initiative also produced zines and public banners to further promote local engagement.
