Climate Action and the Arabic Community

“Right now, we’re on a path for 50°C days and more heatwaves, floods, and bushfires in Western Sydney. We’ve got a plan to raise awareness of both the problem and the solutions for our communities,” stated Mr. Bud Moses, Climate Action Project Manager.

The Climate Action Project, named Tabiea, is a collaborative initiative between the Nature Conservation Council (NCC) and Arab Council Australia (ACA). It aims to increase awareness about climate change and advocate for climate action in Western Sydney, focusing particularly on Arabic-speaking communities in the region.

Western Sydney is becoming increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The region is already experiencing severe heatwaves, extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and poor air quality. These issues also lead to financial burdens, such as increased energy, medical, agricultural, and infrastructure costs. However, the area has the potential to wield significant influence in the fight against climate change.

The project supports NCC’s climate change policy, which includes:

  • Lobbying for government targets and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
  • Supporting a transition to a low-carbon, net-zero emissions nation by 2035, and
  • Progressing toward a renewable energy target of 100% by 2030.

“We are seeking volunteers and supporters who are willing to help us raise awareness about climate change and its impact on our region and lead the charge on climate action,” added Mr. Moses. “We invite those interested to join us for a presentation and discussion on Thursday, 4 July 2024, 6 pm at Arab Council Australia: Level 2, 44 Mandarin Street Fairfield East (Villawood).”
