Australia Post has announced a significant increase in its fuel surcharge, raising it to 12% for May, nearly tripling the previous rate. This change, effective from April 23, comes as the national postal service aims to recover costs associated with rising fuel prices. This increase is reminiscent of similar surges seen during the oil price spike of 2022.

According to The Guardian, the new surcharge will impact Australia Post’s 30,000 contract customers, primarily larger businesses and delivery companies. These businesses may pass on the higher costs to consumers, although household parcel costs will remain unaffected.

The increase in the surcharge coincides with reports of fuel shortages affecting numerous service stations across the country. In Victoria alone, 50 petrol stations were reported to be lacking adequate diesel supplies on Monday.

Victorian opposition leader Jess Wilson has called on Premier Jacinta Allan to request a temporary cut in fuel excise from the federal government, highlighting the financial strain on residents who are struggling to afford both fuel and groceries. Wilson emphasized the need for immediate action to support regional communities and farmers facing supply challenges.
