Western Australia’s Regional Development Assessment Panel has approved a controversial $500 million onshore wind farm project at Scott River, despite facing significant community opposition. The decision was made during a meeting in Margaret River, where the panel unanimously voted in favor of the proposal, which includes 20 turbines and aims to generate 100 megawatts of power.

According to ABC News, the project has been controversial since its announcement in 2024, receiving 405 objections during the public consultation process. While supporters argue it contributes to renewable energy goals, opponents express concerns over the project’s size, noise, and potential environmental impact.

Synergy, the state-owned power provider behind the project, is currently analyzing the approval and determining the wind farm’s commercial viability. The initial development approval is valid for five years, and the proposal’s environmental assessment was previously deemed unnecessary by WA’s environmental watchdog.

The project is set to feed electricity into the Beenup substation, benefiting local homes and businesses. Despite the approval, community members remain divided, with some advocating for the renewable energy transition, while others worry about its effects on the local landscape and environment.
