A new learn to swim program designed specifically for Muslims women of diverse backgrounds, but open to all females, was recently launched in Western Sydney, on the back of a grant from the NSW Government.

Her Swim School is an empowering, not-for-profit program run by Fitness for Purpose, designed exclusively for women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Fitness for Purpose were recently provided a $50,000 grant from the NSW Premier’s Discretionary Fund, to expand and deliver Fitness for Purpose’s Swim Brothers program by subsiding the launch of culturally safe, girls and women pool to surf programs for 50 girls and women.

The Swim Brothers program aims to develop swim and ocean skills to at-risk drowning of young males and provides pathways to qualifications for volunteering/employment.

This new initiative offers several unique features:

  • Ongoing programs: These programs are not one-off ad hoc programs. They run continuously throughout the year.
  • Pathways & Opportunities: It provides pathways and opportunities for Females, like formal qualification and employment as swim instructors, or becoming a surf lifesaver through the bronze medallion program.
  • Tailored Curriculum: The program incorporates culturally sensitive aspects, ensuring that all participants feel comfortable and respected throughout the learning process.
  • Financial Subsidies: Both Swim Brothers and Her Swim School provided financial subsidies of up to 100%, this ensures individuals and families struggling with cost-of-living are able to access learn to swim programs without financial barriers.
  • Dedicated Facilities: The program will be conducted in a private or women-only environment, providing a safe and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Qualified Instructors: The program will be led by experienced female swimming instructors who are trained, developed and recruited from within diverse communities, ensuring a deep understanding of Muslim customs, traditions and culturally safe practices.
