The Bryan Brown Theatre came alive on 24 August 2025 as community members gathered for United with Autism: A Person and a Story, a public forum designed to inform, connect, and empower families, educators, and health professionals.

The evening featured an in-depth conversation with Dr Sam Nassar, who shared practical insights on early support, inclusive education, communication strategies, and pathways to independence. The program was prepared and presented by Mireille Tayeh Abdullah, whose thoughtful moderation kept the discussion grounded in real-world challenges and solutions.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, the event was attended by Clr. Bilal El Hayek, Mayor of the City of Canterbury, who spoke about Council’s commitment to inclusion and the importance of community-led initiatives that amplify autistic voices and their families’ experiences.

Organisers and sponsors

The forum was organised by the Lions Club of Canterbury Bankstown through the Canterbury – Bankstown Community Grants and delivered in collaboration with partners and sponsors including ThinkHQ, the National Autism Community, Embracing Kids Foundation, the Australian International Multicultural Association (AIM Association), and Oz Arab Media as media partner. Their combined support ensured the event was free and accessible to the broader community.

A conversation that continued long after the final slide

One of the night’s highlights was an extended Q&A session that ran well past the scheduled time. Audience members posed thoughtful questions about diagnosis pathways, NDIS navigation, stigma and mental health, classroom supports, employment opportunities, and how to build truly inclusive communities. Dr Nassar responded with practical guidance, evidence-based tips, and resources that attendees can use immediately.

A shared commitment to inclusion

From start to finish, United with Autism: A Person and a Story underscored a simple truth: behind every diagnosis is a person and a unique life story. With leadership from the Lions Club of Canterbury Bankstown and the backing of generous partners, the forum strengthened local networks and set the stage for ongoing collaboration across the Canterbury-Bankstown community.
