Police believe a 91-year-old man found dead with stab wounds in Sydney’s southwest was the victim of family related violence.

A 24-year-old man is under guard in hospital on Thursday after the elderly man was found dead by NSW Police on Wednesday night at a home in Roselands.

Campsie Police Superintendent Sheridan Waldau confirmed the victim suffered stab wounds, but said cause of death would be unknown until a coronial examination.

She said the 24-year-old knew the victim and was a family member.

“We do believe it’s a family related matter,” Supt Waldau told reporters at Campsie, adding that the man under guard had recently come to the notice of police.

Hydrochloric acid was left at the scene and was “spread around the home”, but not on the body itself, Supt Waldau said.

She said two officers who entered the house were overcome by chemical fumes and were later treated at the scene for chemical burns. Both officers had now recovered, she said.

“We’re not sure of the circumstances of exactly what happened last night we haven’t been able to speak to the 24-year-old male,” Supt Waldau said.

The detained man would need treatment, and potentially surgery, on injuries sustained prior to his arrest, she said.

Police were initially contacted by the dead man’s son, describing him as “visibly upset” at what had occurred.
