Bankstown Arts Centre will launch its new exhibition, Plate, at the Bankstown Bites food festival on Saturday 29 July.

Plate explores personal experiences of food, its cultural context and rituals through six artists’ imaginations presented as performance, ceramics and multimedia works.

The multi-sensory exhibition features an innovative auditory experience by Sydney-based artist George Catsi.

“The exhibition Plate was an opportunity for me, as a media artist, to try and evoke a sense of place that sits around the physical artworks in the gallery space,” Catsi said.

“Food orders, a bit like coffee these days, are full of caveats. Everyone has a consideration that needs to be expressed.

“We all respond to the sounds, smells, and visuals of food…. Plate conjures up moments of togetherness and moments of aloneness.”

As part of the food festival, the Bankstown Arts Centre has also created a full program of artist performances, artist talks, jewellery stalls and costume displays.

Other highlights of the Bankstown Bites food festival include a cake decorating competition, dozens of food stalls, free face painting, “kids in the kitchen” activities for youngsters, roving entertainers, live performances and much more!

Join Diana Chan, television host, cook and winner of MasterChef 2017 and fan favourites Arrnott and Fuzz, from My Kitchen Rules 2022, as they cook up a storm on the main stage.

The popular Bites Food Tours will also return this year, where groups will be escorted around Bankstown to receive samples from the best food joints in town.
