NSW Labor has worked to initiate a Parliamentary inquiry to examine the severe teacher shortages in NSW schools.

The Upper House Education Committee inquiry will examine the true extent and impact of the teacher shortages facing NSW schools, including teacher supply issues, merged classes and minimal supervision in schools.

Inquiry submissions are now open online, which allows parents, teachers, principals and members of the public to share their experiences and concerns.

This inquiry follows figures which showed NSW schools had 2,383 teacher vacancies in 2022.

Earlier this year, it was also revealed that Dominic Perrottet’s hand-picked teacher recruitment program has failed to recruit a single teacher.

Deputy Labor Leader and Shadow Minister for Education, Prue Car said:

“This inquiry will shine a light on the Perrottet Government’s failure to ensure every student has a qualified teacher in front of their class.”

“The NSW Government has allowed this problem to get worse and worse over the past decade and the resulting teacher shortages mean students are missing out.”

“Now is the chance for the true extent of the teacher shortages to come to light. As student outcomes continue to decline, government inaction cannot be allowed to continue.”

The committee will report on its findings in November 2022.
