On Sunday, 4 May 2025, Koshigaya Park in Campbelltown came alive with colour, music, and community spirit as families gathered for the annual Macarthur Multicultural Children’s Festival. The event, now a beloved staple in South-West Sydney’s cultural calendar, brought together over 50 community groups to celebrate diversity through vibrant performances, interactive experiences, and family-friendly activities.

A Day of Cultural Discovery

From 10:30 am to 5:00 pm, children and their families embarked on a Cultural Discovery Trail, collecting stamps in their festival passports while visiting stalls from different cultural communities. Each station offered a glimpse into a unique tradition, allowing children to learn about global cultures in an engaging and interactive way. Completing the trail came with small rewards, reinforcing learning through fun. According to Good Morning Macarthur, this aspect of the festival was especially popular with young attendees.

Children also participated in craft activities such as crown-making with native flowers and kite decorating, while beloved characters—including angels, superheroes, fairy tale princesses, and Abby the Koala—roamed the grounds, entertaining families with stories and photo opportunities.

Performances and Community Spirit

A major highlight was the Grand Costume Parade at 1:30 pm, where children dressed in traditional attire and proudly represented their cultural heritage. The parade concluded with a flash mob dance to the iconic anthem “I Am Australian,” symbolising the unity and shared identity at the heart of the festival. This moment captured the event’s core message: that cultural pride and community harmony can coexist beautifully.

Throughout the day, the main stage hosted a dazzling array of performances including Scottish sword dancing, Punjabi Bhangra, Middle Eastern drumming, and Colombian salsa. Sports clinics by the Wests Tigers, interactive cultural displays, and street performers ensured there was never a dull moment.

Words from the Organisers

Festival Founder and Co-Director Brian Laul emphasised that the event is more than entertainment—it’s a space for connection. He noted, as quoted in Good Morning Macarthur, “This festival is all about bringing people together through shared experiences… to connect, learn, and celebrate what makes our community so wonderfully diverse.”

Co-Director Ronna Guzman added, “We see families from all walks of life enjoying the day, and we’re proud to create a space where children can feel proud of who they are, and curious about who others are too.”

Supported by the Community

This year’s festival was made possible through the support of the Australian Government’s Multicultural Grassroots Initiatives Grant, the NSW Government via Multicultural NSW, Campbelltown City Council, and Wests Group Macarthur. Their combined efforts helped ensure the event was free and accessible for all.

Celebrating Harmony Through Play

As it continues to grow each year, the Macarthur Multicultural Children’s Festival stands as a powerful example of how cultural celebration can foster empathy, learning, and friendship among the youngest members of our community. By encouraging children to play and learn together, the festival builds a stronger, more inclusive Australia for future generations.
