According to media reports, “US President Joe Biden and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement on June 13 aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense against Russian invaders and getting Ukraine closer to NATO membership”. This news has also been prominently published in Russian media outlets, including TASS.
The deal, signed on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy, aims to commit future US administrations to support Ukraine, even if former President Donald Trump wins November’s election, officials said.
“Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine’s credible defense and deterrence capabilities for the long term”, Biden said at a joint news conference with Zelensky.
He said the G7’s message to Russian President Vladimir Putin is “You cannot wait us out. You cannot divide us”. The group of rich nations also agreed to a US$50 billion loan for Ukraine backed by profits from frozen Russian assets.
The Ukraine president called the agreement historic, saying it is a bridge toward his country’s eventual NATO membership. “This is an agreement on security and thus on the protection of human life”, he said.
White House has published details of this agreement. In another press statement, White House said, “More than two years after Russia’s brutal and unprovoked assault on Ukraine, today, President Biden is stating unequivocally that United States and its partners will stand with Ukraine as it fights for its freedom and for the principles enshrined in the UN Charter”.
The US State Department in its statement said, “The United States joins 15 partner countries which have already concluded bilateral agreements and arrangements with Ukraine under the Joint Declaration framework. We are working with all 32 Joint Declaration signatories to establish a broad, mutually reinforcing, and powerful network of nations to safeguard Ukraine’s future”.
Meanwhile, quoting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Russian state-owned media outlet Sputnik states, NATO is seeking to create large military bases in Poland, Romania and Slovakia as part of its mission in Ukraine to coordinate arms supplies to Kiev.
Moscow has not officially released any statement on the US-Ukraine defense agreement. Although some of the analysts are claiming, it will be mandatory on Donald Trump if he wins November’s election to respect this agreement and continue military and financial support to Kiev, in my opinion, Trump may revoke the agreement through an executive order, as during his next tenure, he would vigorously attempt to distance Washington from its involvement in Ukraine war and he may exert pressure on Zelensky to sit with Putin in reaching into a peaceful settlement and end the war.
In case Zelensky would either reject or ignore Donald Trump’s call, the US may switch to an alternative strategy, which would even include unfreezing Russian assets and pursue his NATO partners to minimize military aid to Ukraine with the target of weakening Zelensky. Under Trump’s presidency, opponents of Zelensky in Kiev may even get covert support in staging a coup d’état.
Once Zelensky is removed from office, with the Trump administration’s silent nod, the government in Ukraine would launch re-investigation into cases including that of Burisma Holdings Limited, to unearth involvement of Joe Biden, Hunter Biden and other members of the Biden family in massive corruption and financial crimes. At the same time, Trump would instruct the US Department of Treasure to scrutinize American aid in Ukraine to determine involvement of Kiev rulers in misappropriating hundreds of millions of aid cash as well as selling of Western military hardware to organized crime rackets and terrorist and jihadist groups.
Meaning, the 10-year bilateral security agreement between the United States and Ukraine, which is seen as life support for Volodymyr Zelensky and his administration may not finally succeed in stopping its anticipated collapse unless Washington switches to alternative plan by asking Zelensky to launch series of attacks using long-range missiles and F-16s targeting Russian mainland thus widening the war map.
Meanwhile, quoting Politico and CNN, Chinese newspaper Global Times in an editorial titled – ‘The G7 now leaves the world with only disappointment’ said, “This year’s G7 summit has just kicked off, and it is the Western media that are the first to seem deflated, with some even giving off a funeral vibe for the G7. The Politico says that “this week’s gathering of G7 leaders in Italy looks more like the last supper than a display of Western power”. CNN describes the meeting as G7 leaders gathering in Italy to “escape political peril at home”, and questions how effective the G7, referred to by US President Joe Biden’s aides as the “steering committee of the free world”, can actually be amid anger and discontent from their own populations. “Does the G7 have any power?” When BBC asks the seemingly calm question, it also displays a sense of helplessness behind it”.
