According to ABC News, Australia and Ireland will meet in the inaugural AFLW representative clash this weekend, following an official announcement in May. Irish AFLW players responded enthusiastically when the AFL sought their interest in the match, with GWS player Eilish O’Dowd saying the group had wanted such an opportunity for a long time.

The teams will play under Australian Rules with a Sherrin, after the Irish contingent chose that option over a Gaelic ball. Ireland captain Orla O’Dwyer said bringing leading Irish and Australian players together was central to the occasion, while also pointing to the chance that Irish supporters could become AFLW fans during the season.

The contest is expected to contrast Ireland’s speed and constant running, shaped by Gaelic football, with Australia’s composure. Ireland coach Colin O’Riordan said his side had not had a main training session and would instead complete a captain’s run, describing the approach as one of adapting quickly. Australian coach Darren Crocker said his team had discussed its identity and described captain Jasmine Garner as skilful, composed and calm.

The game comes one week before the AFLW season opener between Carlton and St Kilda at Docklands Stadium, creating workload and conditioning considerations. Both teams will have an extended nine-player interchange bench, four more than standard AFLW matches, to manage players and allow all 25 squad members to take part. Ireland has 46 current players across the AFLW competition, while Australia selected from almost 500 players. O’Dwyer said Ireland was comfortable entering as an underdog, while Crocker said it would be a mistake to underestimate the significance of the historic international fixture for either side.
