The federal government published a new list of AI consumer priorities on Sunday that signals tighter oversight of artificial intelligence in automated government decision-making and a push to strengthen privacy safeguards.
According to ABC News, the package includes a framework to ensure decision-making is “fair and accurate” when agencies use AI, a pledge to “better regulate” AI in federal agencies such as Centrelink and Services Australia, and a commitment to revisit personal data protection laws. The government faces pressure to guarantee human intervention in administration of schemes, particularly social services; Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth has previously said humans would remain involved in the Jobseeker payment process.
The priority list also flags consumer protections. The government singled out “retail surveillance pricing”—using harvested data to set different prices for individuals—as an issue to examine, with Assistant Minister for Competition Andrew Leigh to lead work on options in consumer law. The document notes earlier privacy reforms in the government’s first term and says the government could not secure support for a crackdown on targeted advertising proposed in 2024, which would have given Australians the right to opt out of targeted ads.
This matters because automated decisions have already had concrete effects: the Commonwealth Ombudsman found almost a thousand jobseekers had income support payments unlawfully terminated by automatic cancellations, and automated elements of aged care home support and an NDIS planning tool that generates participant budgets have attracted scrutiny. The ombudsman has opened an investigation into an algorithm-based aged care assessment tool, underlining risks in relying on automated systems for social services.
What happens next: AI is expected to dominate debate at the National Labor Conference in Adelaide later this week, with delegates, parliamentarians and union leaders having until Wednesday to propose amendments to Labor’s AI policy platform before a vote.
