Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz has been fully reopened to commercial shipping, effective immediately.

The move follows the commencement of a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, signaling a potential de-escalation in the broader regional conflict.

“In alignment with the ceasefire in Lebanon, we announce that the Strait of Hormuz is fully open to all commercial vessels throughout the duration of the ceasefire,” Araghchi posted on the social media platform X. He further clarified that all maritime traffic must follow the “coordinated route” previously established by the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization.

A strategic chokehold

The reopening of the Strait—where approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas flows—comes after weeks of severe disruption. Iran had previously imposed restrictions on the waterway in retaliation for US and Israeli strikes, prompting a US-led naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The maritime closure had sent global oil prices soaring and triggered a diplomatic scramble, with Pakistan acting as a key mediator between Washington and Tehran.
