Rex plane forced to make emergency landing in Melbourne

A plane has made an emergency landing at Melbourne Airport amid reports of smoke coming from the cockpit.

The emergency unfolded about 11.15am on Tuesday, when more than a dozen fire and other emergency services responded to the alarm from the incoming Rex flight.

“As per Melbourne Airport Emergency Plan, emergency services were activated and attended,” an airport spokesperson said.

The Rex 737-800 was able to land safely, and all passengers were able to disembark.

“The plane landed without incident and taxied to the bay. Emergency services are now in the process of standing down,” the spokesperson said.

Rex had flights arriving in Melbourne from Brisbane and Sydney about 11.15am on Tuesday. It is not known which was affected by the emergency.

The Boeing 737-800 has a capacity of about 160 passengers.
